Partnership restores wetlands in Buffalo Creek Watershed
State Game Lands #232 comprises the majority of the Buffalo Creek Watershed and was recently acquired by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The property is located in Washington County Pennsylvania and was recently identified as part of an “IBA” or Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society. This unique property presented many opportunities to restore degraded wetland and associated upland habitats significant to waterfowl and other wetland-dependent species of wildlife. Ducks Unlimited, The Foundation for California University. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The USDA — Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Pennsylvania Game Commission working through the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program recently restored over 40 acres of vital wetland and associated upland habitat on the property. The restored habitat will provide nesting and brood sites for resident populations of mallards and wood ducks as well as important food sources for water fowl migrating through in the spring and fall. Waterfowl will not be the only beneficiaries of this vital habitat.
Both game and non-game species of wildlife such as whitetail deer, turkey, pheasant, bobwhite quail, amphibians, reptiles, and numerous species of passerines or songbirds will benefit from the restored habitat. Visitors to the Game Lands will also benefit from the recreational opportunities that the restored wetlands now present. Ducks Unlimited was able provided the PA Game Commission with technical assistance and the Foundations for California University provided funds to complete the restoration project. |
